Heartsaver

Our foundational course in CPR, AED use and choking-relief techniques that will equip you with life-saving skills to be prepared for a cardiac arrest emergency.

Heart & Stroke’s short, foundational resuscitation program focuses on practical skills and knowledge that will help you to respond confidently and effectively in a cardiac arrest emergency. Our program is geared to students with little or no medical training – making it ideal for you if your job requires you to learn life-saving techniques for the workplace or if you’re simply interested in developing these critical skills.

After you successfully complete the course, you’ll receive a course completion card in CPR and AED use, which is most suitable for employment, regulatory and other requirements, and which will now be valid for two years.

Please note: Because your employer may have their own standards for CPR and AED training, we recommend that you check with your employer to ensure you’re selecting the right course.

Heartsaver® is the right program for a wide range of students

Heartsaver® students come from an array of professions, backgrounds and interests that include:

  • Healthcare and allied health professionals (such as personal support workers/healthcare aides, medical technicians, dentists, dental hygienists, dietitians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and medical/dental office assistants)
  • Non-healthcare professionals (such as security guards, early childhood educators, personal trainers and fitness instructors)
  • Volunteers (involved with churches, libraries, community centres/events, clubs, caretaking and more)
  • General public (who have an interest in developing CPR and AED life-saving skills)

What’s new and what’s improved about Heartsaver

  1. We have added more course options – renewal and blended learning – to meet a broader range of student needs and learning styles.
  2. We have integrated adaptive learning technology into our blended learning courses, enabling BOTH full and renewal course students to take the same course. First-time/full course students will follow a learning pathway that covers all course content, while students who’ve previously taken a CPR AED course will follow an accelerated learning pathway that adapts to their level of knowledge and confidence in course topics.
    • Benefit to students who have taken a CPR AED course before: You could save time in completing the online component while ensuring learning outcomes are met. For certain students, instead of completing a prerequisite challenge to attend an in-classroom renewal course, you can take a blended learning course to better address gaps in your knowledge.
    • Benefit to instructors: You can more easily meet course minimums since full and renewal course students take the same in-classroom component. Additionally, students who take the blended learning course will complete their knowledge test during the online component and will arrive to the in-classroom component ready to focus on skills practice and testing.
  3. We have streamlined our Level C courses (which focus on adults, children and infants). Instead of simply reteaching the life-saving techniques used for adult care, we used this information as building blocks to restructure our courses and now emphasize the differences in the steps of care for adults vs children and infants for more impactful learning.
  4. We have retained our core learning objectives (CPR, AED use and choking-relief techniques) in our Heartsaver® programs. But we also introduced a lesson on drowning, increased our focus on the care of women (in particular, during CPR), better emphasized the opioid-associated life-threatening emergency lesson and introduced prerequisite challenges for renewal course options.

Choosing the right Heartsaver® course that best suits your needs

Heartsaver® CPR AED program offers two levels of course content: Level A (adult only) and Level C (adult, child and infant)

Step 1: Determine the focus of your Heartsaver® course.
Do you need or want to learn life-saving techniques for adults only (Level A) or for adults, children and infants (Level C)?

Step 2: Decide which course level you’ll take: full or renewal.
Are you proficient in CPR and AED skills and knowledge? Is your certification for your workplace approaching its expiration date? Is this your first time taking a CPR and AED course? Answers to these questions will help you to decide.

Step 3: Determine which of our two learning formats suits you best.

  • In-classroom: A fully in-person learning experience. Our traditional, end-to-end, instructor-led course features both cognitive learning and a thorough skills practice and testing for a robust learning experience.
  • Blended learning: A mix of online, cognitive learning and in-classroom, instructor-led skills practice and testing. You complete the online component at your own pace, and when you’re ready, you attend a shorter in-classroom component focused on practising skills. Both full and renewal course students access the same blended learning component, thanks to newly integrated adaptive technology!
